2026 Box Office Breaks $7 Billion Milestone
The U.S. domestic box office crossed the $7 billion mark this week, according to data from Rentrak. That is 20% ahead of the same period last year (January 1 through August 23, 2025 sat at $5.86 billion) and puts 2026 on track for the strongest post-pandemic year. It is 7% behind 2019, which finished at $11.4 billion, but the trajectory has been steady since the industry-wide disruptions of 2020. If the current +20% pace holds through the remaining months, the full year could reach roughly $10.6 billion.
Summer 2026 is performing even more strongly: the seasonal total stands at $4.4 billion, 26% ahead of last summer and only 2% below the record 2013 summer of $4.755 billion. To hit an all-time summer record, the season needs to gross roughly $311.8 million over the next 15 days, a target that remains within reach given the current momentum.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Keeps Swinging
Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped the domestic box office for a fourth consecutive weekend with an estimated $39 million, pushing its domestic total to $854.9 million. The film has now surpassed 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the No. 3 highest-grossing film ever domestically, behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Worldwide, Brand New Day has crossed $2.22 billion, making it the No. 6 release of all time globally.
The superhero film faced fresh competition this frame from two new releases and still took the crown. That kind of staying power is rare for a film in its fourth weekend and underscores why theatrical windows continue to matter for blockbuster audiences.
The Odyssey Makes History for Nolan
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey moved past $539 million domestically this weekend, officially making it the highest-grossing film of the director's career. It passed The Dark Knight (2008), which had sat at the top of Nolan's filmography for nearly two decades. The mythological epic starring Matt Damon as Odysseus landed in third place this weekend with an estimated $19.5 million for its sixth frame.
Over the weekend, The Odyssey also moved past Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated title of all time globally. The achievement adds another chapter to a year that has already been remarkable for the director, whose previous film Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Horror and Action Fill the Gap
Insidious: Out of the Further opened at No. 2 with $25.3 million from 3,330 North American theaters, giving the Screen Gems franchise its biggest opening since Insidious: Chapter 2. The sixth installment brings the franchise total past $800 million worldwide. The film carries a 57% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ CinemaScore, tying 2023's Insidious: The Red Door for the lowest grade in the series. With no major horror releases for the next four weeks, the film should have a clear run in theaters.
Jason Statham's Mutiny, a Lionsgate action thriller directed by Jean-François Richet, opened at No. 6 with $7.5 million from 2,600 screens. Produced on a $40 million budget, it earned an 87% audience score despite a mixed 50% critic rating. The film follows Statham's Shelter, which opened to $5.5 million domestically earlier this year.
What Comes Next
The fall lineup should test whether the current momentum can sustain itself through the season. Warner Bros. and Legendary's Dune: Part Three, Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday over Christmas, and the Resident Evil reboot expected in September will all play pivotal roles. On the horizon, Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars, Ketchup Entertainment's Coyote vs. Acme, Paramount's By Any Means, and A24's Onslaught are among the titles to watch.
The data makes clear that 2026 is shaping up as a pivotal year for theatrical exhibition. Five films have crossed $1 billion domestically this year alone, and the summer season is tracking for the highest total in over a decade. Whether the gains hold through the fall and holiday season will determine if this year finally surpasses the 2019 record and what it means for the industry going forward.
