Paramount Pictures has officially greenlit the long-rumored sequel to its 1990 racing blockbuster with a full cast announcement, release date and creative team, marking one of the most significant franchise resurrections in recent Hollywood history. Anne Hathaway has joined Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder 2, with Paramount setting a June 2, 2028, theatrical release.
Cruise revealed the news on his social platforms Saturday, posting a photograph of the two stars leaning against a NASCAR race car on a Daytona track. The image confirmed what Deadline first reported: the sequel is moving forward with both leads attached and a confirmed production timeline.
Director and Production Details
Jonathan Levine, known for Long Shot and Mr. Irrelevant, is confirmed to direct the project. Cruise is producing alongside longtime collaborator Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Will Staples penned the screenplay.
The film will be shot for IMAX screens and released in premium formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX. The theatrical-first strategy signals Paramount's confidence in the property, which had sat in development limbo for years after Cruise first floated the idea.
Returning as Cole Trickle
