EA Motive has officially acknowledged leaked gameplay footage from its upcoming Iron Man video game, responding on the title's X account with a message that confirmed years of speculation while offering no new release date.
The response came days after more than two minutes of early development footage surfaced online, showing Tony Stark in multiple suits, fast free-flight over a cityscape, and combat encounters that draw from established superhero game design patterns. The studio's official post read: "Well, that didn't go as planned. But now you know, and we've got a lot more to show you. See you when we're ready."
Electronic Arts and Marvel first announced the partnership in September 2022. Motive Studios, the studio behind the Dead Space remake and Star Wars Squadrons, has maintained near-total silence about the project for nearly four years. The leaked footage represents the first substantial look at what the studio has been building since then.
What the leak revealed
The footage, first reported by Polygon on August 28, 2026, shows a handful of early cinematic scenes alongside gameplay sequences. Several Marvel characters appear by name, including Pepper Potts, Obadiah Stane, and Henry Pym, as well as villains Madame Masque and Iron Monger. One shot includes what appears to be Ultron, and another features a character resembling Yellowjacket. Polygon's coverage of the leak provides additional detail on the game's scope and setting.
According to Polygon's coverage of the leak, the game appears to be set primarily in Chicago rather than New York City, which marks a departure from Iron Man's more common cinematic settings. The character roster also leans closer to the Marvel Comics versions of these figures than their MCU interpretations, though they remain recognizable to movie fans.
The footage shows Iron Man traveling beyond the Chicago setting to locations including Japan and a SHIELD Helicarrier in the skies. A variety of suits and specialized weapons appear throughout, with one scene depicting Tony Stark customizing armor using a circuit-board-style interface that places components and boosters on a grid layout. IGN also covered the leak extensively, noting the early look at gameplay that fans had waited years to see.
Combat and movement design
The game's combat approach appears informed by the Batman Arkham series and Marvel's Spider-Man games, with additional Iron Man-specific flight mechanics layered on top. The suit customization system seems inspired by Resident Evil's inventory management and Dead Space's node-based upgrade system, a design language Motive Studios already mastered during its work on the Dead Space remake.
The mix of weapons-based combat encounters and high-flying dogfighting sequences builds directly on Motive Studios' experience with Star Wars Squadrons, which focused heavily on space combat and ship customization. That expertise should translate well to an Iron Man game that emphasizes aerial freedom.
Since this is early development footage, the visuals show rough edges. The movement still carries an unfinished quality in places, though the overall direction signals ambition rather than experimentation.
EA's official response and what comes next
EA's response via the official Iron Man game X account was notable for several reasons. It was the first public statement from the game's official social channels since the project was announced in 2022, and the phrasing of the message suggested the studio is aware of fan expectations while managing them carefully.
The post provides no indication of when the next official reveal will occur, only that it will happen "when ready." This is consistent with how major studios handle leaks: acknowledge the situation, contain any damage, and maintain their planned release schedule.
EA and Motive Studios have not announced a release window. Given that the game entered development in 2022 and Motive was still working on Dead Space at the time of announcement, a 2027 release seems like the most plausible target. If EA and Marvel want to capitalize on hype surrounding the December 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday and next year's Avengers: Secret Wars, an early 2027 launch would align with that strategy.
Notably, Iron Man himself is not expected to appear in either upcoming Avengers film. Robert Downey Jr. will return, but as the villain Doctor Doom. This creates an interesting timing question for the game: should EA release before audiences see Doom's introduction, or wait to ride the wave of renewed Iron Man interest after the films?
How this compares to other Marvel game leaks
This is not the first time a Marvel game has suffered a high-profile leak. Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine footage leaked in 2023, and actual gameplay did not appear publicly for several more years. Grand Theft Auto 6 has also dealt with extensive leaks ahead of its official gameplay reveal from Rockstar, which is already covered in our earlier reporting on Rockstar calls GTA VI leaks heartbreaking.
The pattern is consistent: leaks tend to come from test builds, internal playtests, or compromised development environments. The footage from Motive Studios appears to have been recorded during a test sometime in August 2026, which places it relatively close to the present despite being unfinished work.
EA's response, while brief, marks a meaningful shift in how the studio has handled the project. After four years of silence, the acknowledgment signals that the game is progressing, even if a polished reveal is still months away. For fans who have waited since 2022, that confirmation alone may be enough to maintain interest.
