Chinese Humanoid Robots Shatter Sprint Records in Beijing

A humanoid robot from Beijing-based X-Humanoid finished the 100m sprint at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing in 9.39 seconds, beating Usain Bolt's 100m world record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009, according to AP News. The robot also cleared 2.88 meters in the standing high jump, surpassing Javier Sotomayor's human record of 2.45 meters.

The events took place on the opening day of the five-day World Humanoid Robot Games, now in its second edition, held at Beijing's National Speed Skating Oval, also known as the Ice Ribbon, which was built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. According to AP News, more than 2,000 humanoid robots participated across the five-day event.

What the Games Look Like

The 2026 edition is co-hosted by the Beijing Municipal Government and China Media Group. It features 32 events across two categories, with more than 500 humanoid robots expected and 16 countries participating, including Germany, Japan, and the United States. The competitive category includes athletics, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, martial arts, street dance, sport dance, tug-of-war, and pitch-pot. A separate scenario-based contest tests robots in real-world settings including factories, hotels, hospitals, and emergency response.

This year marks a qualitative shift. The 100m sprint events are fully autonomous, meaning no human teleoperation is involved. Scenario-based events have moved from simulated venues into real-world environments. The organizers describe the goal as pushing humanoid robots from demonstration tools toward practical productivity tools.

During the opening ceremony on August 22, hundreds of humanoid robots marched in formation onto the field in a synchronized display. The Tiangong Ultra robot, developed by a Beijing-based local government-backed research centre, completed the 100m in 9.39 seconds. Honor, the Chinese smartphone maker, reported a trial run of its humanoid in 9.32 seconds at a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second. The Tiangong Ultra also finished the 400m in 38.15 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than Bolt's world record of 43.03 seconds.

In the standing high jump, the same robot cleared 2.88 meters, a dramatic improvement over the 0.95 meters achieved by a humanoid at last year's first edition.

Not every run went smoothly. France 24 reported that several robots failed to start, others moved at walking pace, and one boxer stumbled off the ring and stayed motionless until humans lifted it away. Fans were amused by the failures as much as the records.

The Broader Context

China manufactures the majority of the world's humanoid robots. The games were held the same week as the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies showcased around 3,000 products including humanoid robots. The Pentagon recently added Unitree, one of China's leading humanoid robot makers, to a list of companies with ties to the Chinese military. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission also announced a ban on imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, citing national security reasons and targeting China.

The hardware costs driving this industry are already shifting. Nvidia notified its largest customers that AI server prices would rise by more than 15 percent on systems shipped in early 2027, with soaring HBM memory chip costs as the primary driver. That infrastructure investment underpins the AI systems that power many of these robots.

What It Actually Means

Experts note that humanoid robots remain mostly used for demonstrations, performances, and research at this stage. Mass deployment in real-world applications is still years away. The sprint events, while impressive as physics demonstrations, test different capabilities than those needed for household work, factory labor, or elder care.

That said, the pace of improvement is measurable. The high jump jumped from 0.95 meters to 2.88 meters in a single year. The fully autonomous sprint events signal a step away from teleoperation toward genuine embodied AI decision-making, where the robot must balance itself, control its gait, and adapt to the track without a human pilot.

The U.S. response, from import bans to military blacklistings, underscores that Beijing's push into humanoid robotics is viewed as a strategic competition, not just a sporting spectacle. Whether these robots will ever work in the factories or homes that China aims to automate remains an open question. The record books will keep their numbers for now.
